The Lalibela Rock-Hewn Churches are located in Ethiopia, a country in East Africa, and they’re special because they weren’t built up from the ground — they were carved down into solid rock!
Unlike regular churches that are built with blocks going up toward the sky, the Lalibela churches were made by carving downward into red volcanic rock — imagine carving a huge sculpture out of modeling clay, but way bigger!
The Lalibela Churches were built around 900 years ago, during the reign of King Lalibela, who wanted to create a “New Jerusalem” for people who couldn’t make the long journey to the real Jerusalem!
The Lalibela Churches became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978, which means they’re so special that the whole world works together to protect them!
