Facts About Hornets For Kids

Hornets sometimes raid honeybee hives to hunt bees and steal honey and larvae. They can break into a hive, attack the defending bees, and take food back to feed their own young.

Special Adaptations

Hornets have water-resistant (hydrophobic) wings covered with a waxy coating, which helps water bead off them.

A hornet's exoskeleton is covered in tiny, branched hairs that help them detect air movements!

The hornet's venom contains a chemical that attracts other hornets to help defend the nest!

A hornet’s compound eyes are made up of thousands of tiny hexagon-shaped units called ommatidia, which work together like a mosaic to form its vision.
