History & Origins

Central Park was the very first major public park designed in the United States, opening in 1858, when many of your great-great-great-grandparents were alive!

Central Park wasn’t always there — it was created by talented landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, who won a design contest in 1858 with their “Greensward Plan.”
