Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano, which means it’s built up of many layers of lava, ash, and rock — like a giant layer cake of the Earth!

Mount St. Helens was named in 1792 by Captain George Vancouver to honor his friend, British diplomat Alleyne Fitzherbert, also known as Baron St. Helens!

Before its famous 1980 eruption, Mount St. Helens stood 9,677 feet (2,950 meters) tall — about as high as 920 school buses stacked on top of each other!
