Facts About Mont-Saint-Michel (France) For Kids

Basic Information & Location

Fun Fact! Mont Saint-Michel is a magical island-castle-church in France that looks just like it came from a fairy tale — it sits on a tiny island off the coast of Normandy, where the land meets the sea!

Mont Saint-Michel isn’t always an island — when the tide is low, you can walk to it across the sand, but when the tide comes in, the water surrounds it completely, making it look like it’s floating on the sea!

The name “Mont Saint-Michel” means “Mount Saint Michael” in English, named after the Archangel Michael who, according to legend, appeared to a bishop in 708 CE and asked for a church to be built there!

Mont Saint-Michel became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979, which means it’s so special and important that the whole world has agreed to help protect it forever!
