The Lion Who Learned Manners

Share Story

Once upon a time, in a vast and peaceful forest, there lived a young lion named Leo. Leo was big, strong, and had a golden mane that shone brightly under the sun. He was proud of his strength and often roared loudly to let everyone know he was the king of the jungle.

One day, as Leo was walking through the forest, he bumped into a small rabbit. The poor rabbit was startled and quickly scurried away. Leo, with a big grin on his face, laughed and said, “Why are you running away, little rabbit? I’m the king of this forest! You should respect me!”

Later, Leo walked past a group of birds perched on a tree. He wanted to get their attention, so he shook the branches and shouted, “Hey, birds! Move out of my way! I’m the king, and I need to pass!”

The birds fluttered away in fear, and Leo didn’t think much of it. He continued his walk, feeling proud of himself. But soon, he noticed something strange. The other animals in the forest seemed to avoid him. The rabbits hopped away whenever they saw him, the deer moved quickly into the bushes, and even the trees seemed to sway away from his path.

One day, Leo’s mother, the wise old lioness, saw him walking alone through the forest. She called him over and asked, “Why are you walking by yourself, my son?”

Leo replied, “I’m the king of this forest, Mother. I don’t need anyone. They should respect me!”

His mother smiled gently and said, “Leo, being the king doesn’t mean you can treat others poorly. True respect is earned, not demanded. You must learn to be kind and show good manners to everyone in the forest, big or small.”

Leo was puzzled. “What do you mean, Mother?”

“Well,” she continued, “imagine this: If you walked through the forest and said ‘excuse me’ when you passed others, and treated everyone with kindness, they would feel comfortable around you. When you show respect to others, they will respect you in return. It’s not about your strength, Leo. It’s about how you treat others.”

Leo thought about what his mother had said. The next day, he decided to try something different. He walked through the forest, but this time, instead of roaring and demanding respect, he spoke kindly to the animals he met.

When he saw the rabbit again, he smiled and said, “Hello, little rabbit. I hope you’re having a nice day. Would you mind if I passed by?”

The rabbit, surprised by Leo’s kind words, nodded and hopped aside to let him pass.

Later, Leo came across the birds perched on the tree. He didn’t shake the branches this time. Instead, he said softly, “Excuse me, dear birds. I hope I’m not disturbing you. I’d like to pass by if it’s alright.”

The birds chirped happily and flew a little higher to give him room.

As Leo continued his walk, he noticed something amazing. The animals no longer avoided him. In fact, many of them greeted him with smiles, and some even walked alongside him. Leo realized that when he treated others with kindness and respect, they treated him the same way.

From that day on, Leo became known as the kindest and most respected lion in the forest. He would greet every animal with a smile, ask if he could pass by, and always say “thank you” when they helped him. The animals loved Leo, and they knew that he was not just a king because of his strength, but because of his good manners and respect for everyone.

Moral:
