One warm, sunny afternoon, a young boy named Sam was walking along the beach. The air smelled fresh, and the waves gently crashed against the shore. Sam loved visiting the beach, where he would spend hours running through the sand, collecting seashells, and watching the seabirds flying overhead.

As Sam wandered along the water’s edge, he noticed something strange. There were hundreds, maybe even thousands, of starfish scattered across the sand. They had been washed up by the tide, and now they were drying out under the hot sun. Sam could see that the starfish would not survive much longer if they were left on the shore.

Feeling a little worried, Sam walked over to one of the starfish. He gently picked it up and tossed it back into the water, watching it float away with the current.

But then, as Sam walked further down the beach, he saw more and more starfish, all lying helplessly in the sun. They were too many for him to save, and Sam started to feel a little overwhelmed. He paused, thinking to himself, What difference can one small boy make? There are just too many starfish, and I can’t save them all.

Just then, an older man, who had been walking his dog along the beach, approached Sam. The man noticed the boy’s troubled expression as he looked at the starfish.

“Are you alright, young man?” the man asked kindly.

Sam looked up at him and sighed. “I see all these starfish, but there are so many. I can’t save them all. It feels pointless.”

The man smiled softly and knelt down next to Sam. “Well,” he said, “I think you’re doing something very important. Every little action matters. You may not be able to save every starfish, but that doesn’t mean the ones you save don’t count.”

Sam looked at the starfish he had thrown back into the water. He smiled a little, but he still wasn’t sure if it really made a difference.

The man nodded. “Let me show you something.” He pointed to a starfish lying just a few steps away. Sam picked it up and threw it back into the water again.

“See?” the man said. “You made a difference for that one. To that starfish, you were its whole world.”

Sam stood there for a moment, thinking about the man’s words. He looked out at the vast beach covered with starfish, and then back at the small, but important, action he had just made.

From that moment on, Sam felt differently. Every time he saw a starfish, he would gently pick it up and return it to the water. It didn’t matter how many there were; every little bit of help counted. He knew that even though he couldn’t save them all, the ones he helped would remember the kindness.

As the sun began to set and the beach slowly emptied, Sam smiled. He had done his part, and that made all the difference.
